What credential will I earn?
Completing both courses earns you the UBC Micro-certificate in Leadership in Sustainable Mine Closure — a university-backed credential from UBC BRIMM that you can add to your professional profile.
Do I have to take both courses?
No. Each course stands on its own and can be taken individually for professional development. The micro-certificate is awarded when you complete both.
How much time does each course take?
Each course involves 40+ hours of work over six to eight weeks, including live sessions, self-paced modules and multiple assignments. Courses run in cohorts, so you'll move through the material alongside other participants.
When do courses start?

Are the courses fully online?
Yes. Both courses combine live, expert-led sessions with self-paced modules you complete on your own time.
What's involved in completing a course?
Each course includes multiple assignments alongside the live sessions and self-paced modules. Completing them is what earns you the credential.
Do I receive a digital badge?
Yes. A digital badge is issued for each course you complete, so even a single course leaves you with a verifiable credential. Complete both and you also receive the UBC Micro-certificate in Leadership in Sustainable Mine Closure.
Do I need a background in mining?
There are no formal prerequisites. The material is written for people already working in or around the sector, so experience in mining will help you get more from it — but it isn't a requirement for enrolment.

Mid- to senior-level professionals whose work touches closure decisions: environmental and closure specialists, mine managers and engineers, HR and training leads, Indigenous and community engagement professionals, and regulators, consultants and policy advisors.

Each course is $1,475. The program is free for BC residents through the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant.
